EU GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION

Finnish Sawn Timber is now protected by a Geographical Indication

A European recognition of the distinctive link between Finnish Sawn Timber, its geographical origin and the qualities and reputation associated with that origin.

What is Geographical Indication?

A Geographical Indication (GI) protects the name of a product whose qualities, reputation or other characteristics are essentially linked to its geographical origin.

For Finnish Sawn Timber, the registration recognises and protects the connection between the product, Finland as its place of origin, and the characteristics on which the registration is based.

The basis for GI recognition

Short growing season

Finnish trees grow during a short season of around 100 days a year. Depending on species and growing conditions, they typically take 50–120 years to reach maturity.

Slow, dense growth

Slow growth produces tight annual rings and dense wood. This density is one of the key characteristics behind the strength of Finnish sawn timber.

Strength with low weight

Dense, fine-grained Finnish softwood combines high strength with relatively low weight. Its strength-to-weight ratio makes it particularly well suited to demanding structural applications.

Small, sound knots

Slow-growing trees develop relatively small knots. Knot size, quality and location directly affect the strength, stability and visual quality of sawn timber.

Stable, consistent timber

Dense, even grain contributes to dimensional stability and reduced deformation. The structure of the wood also supports consistent moisture and thermal performance.

Finnish raw material, Finnish production

Wood from Finland is made exclusively from pine and spruce grown and sourced in Finland, and the sawn timber itself must be produced at an industrial sawmill in Finland.

FOR BUYERS AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

What the GI means in practice

The GI protects Finnish Sawn Timber as a name linked to a defined geographical origin and to the qualities and reputation associated with that origin. Only sawn timber meeting the registered requirements can be marketed under the protected name.

The protection also has a practical effect in the market: in countries covered by the EU’s GI protection arrangements, local authorities monitor the use of protected names and can intervene in cases of misuse. For buyers, the GI provides a reliable way to identify Finnish Sawn Timber with verified origin.
